Red Lake District

Red Lake District enlarge

The Red Lake gold mining camp, one of the most important gold producing regions of North America, was discovered in 1926 and the first production was achieved in 1930. Gold production has proceeded continually but significantly only since 1948, when the Campbell Red Lake and Dickenson (Red Lake) Mines were developed. Historically 24,248,231 ounces of gold at an average grade of 0.45 oz/ton gold have been produced. Combined, the Campbell Red Lake and Red Lake Mines contain or have produced 22 million ounces of gold at 0.66 oz/ton.

These two mines are now held by Goldcorp Inc. and discovery of substantial new gold deposits has continued. Gold Eagle’s Bruce Channel discovery, adjacent to Goldcorp’s Red Lake Mine, was purchased by Goldcorp in September, 2008, for $1.5 billion. Goldcorp, the most active miner in the camp, holds a large claim group adjacent to and east of the DiaMine option property.

DiaMine Explorations Inc. has negotiated an option to earn a 100% interest in a contiguous group of 8 mineral claims totaling 94 claim units, or 3,760 acres, in Byshe Township in the south central part of the Red Lake Mining District.

The northern part of the DiaMine claims covers an interlayered sequence of older and younger volcanic rocks. The major gold mines in the camp occur in the older volcanics but gold mineralization has been encountered at the contact between the two ages of volcanic rock.

In 1998, geochemical lake and stream surveys for gold were carried out after a full reconnaissance. They encountered highly anomalous gold values on the west shores of Keg and Gullrock Lakes and established a cut and chained grid to follow up with a soil geochemical survey for gold and indicator elements. Results of this survey showed an anomalous EW trend in the direction of the volcanic stratigraphy.

In 2002, the property was cut and chained using essentially the same grid to guide geophysical Induced Polarization (IP) surveying. The survey produced two chargeable horizons, in part corresponding to the soil geochemical anomaly and trending E-W. Not shown are the results of the corresponding resistivity survey, which shows two resistivity highs corresponding to the chargeability highs in a pattern typical of quartz veining and silicification alteration (resistivity) with development of sulphide mineralization (chargeability) all possibly developed near a volcanic contact.

In 2002 a grid was cut and VLF-EM and magnetometer surveys were conducted over the same zone. The results of these surveys are not shown, but there is a definite correspondence of a magnetic low with the interpreted zone of silicification and quartz veining.

A great deal of valuable and positive gold exploration information has been generated on the DiaMine property but not followed up. The reasons for this could be many, varying from lack of funds to shift of focus, but that doesn’t diminish the tremendous position the company is now in by attempting to establish a viable gold deposit in the Red Lake camp. The previous data compiled offers a blueprint for initial exploration on this large property. The zone of interest is by accounts overburden covered, although there are shallow reefs indicated in the auger soil sampling in the vicinity of anomalies. It is possible some glacially transported boulders exist a short distance down ice.
